Civil Defence Approved Fire Doors in UAE: What Contractors Need to Know

18 February 2025 · Khat Al Barq Doors & Windows Factory

Why Civil Defence Approval Matters

In the UAE, fire rated doors cannot be specified from any supplier. The Civil Defence authority — separately in Sharjah and Dubai — maintains a list of approved products and manufacturers. Using a non-approved product on a project means your building will not receive a Certificate of Occupancy (CoO).

For contractors and consultants, this creates a significant project risk if the wrong supplier is selected early in procurement.

What Is Civil Defence Approval?

Civil Defence approval is an official certification issued by the relevant emirate's Civil Defence authority confirming that:

  • 1.The fire door product has been tested by an accredited laboratory to international fire resistance standards
  • 2.The test results meet UAE minimum requirements
  • 3.The manufacturer's quality control processes have been audited
  • 4.The product is suitable for use in UAE construction projects
  • Separate approvals exist for Sharjah Civil Defence and Dubai Civil Defence. A product approved in one emirate may or may not be approved in the other — always verify both if your project spans emirates.

Documents to Request From Your Fire Door Supplier

Before specifying or ordering fire rated doors for a UAE project, request the following from your supplier:

  • Civil Defence Approval Certificate: — specifying Sharjah CD and/or Dubai CD
  • Certificate of Compliance: — from an accredited body confirming fire resistance test results
  • Fire test reports: — showing FD60, FD90, or FD120 test results from a recognised laboratory
  • ISO or CCS certificates: — confirming quality management
  • Trade License: — confirming the supplier is a registered UAE business
  • Without these documents, your main contractor and consultant cannot approve the product for installation.

Common Mistakes on UAE Fire Door Projects

    1. Specifying doors before confirming Civil Defence approval

Always confirm the supplier holds current Civil Defence approval for the specific emirate before including them in a specification or BOQ.

    2. Using an expired compliance certificate

Civil Defence approvals and compliance certificates have expiry dates — verify the certificate is still current for your project timeline.

    3. Installing without correct frame and hardware

A fire rated door is only as effective as its complete assembly. The door leaf, frame, intumescent seals, door closer, and hardware must all be compatible and correctly installed. Using incorrect hardware voids the fire rating.

    4. Not retaining documentation on site

UAE building control and Civil Defence inspectors will request documentation during inspections. Keep certified copies of all fire door compliance documents in the site file.
