FD60 vs FD90 vs FD120: Which Fire Door Rating Do You Need in the UAE?

10 March 2025 · Khat Al Barq Doors & Windows Factory

What Are Fire Door Ratings?

Fire door ratings — FD60, FD90, and FD120 — indicate how long a door can withstand fire before failing. The number represents minutes of fire resistance under standardized test conditions.

  • FD60: Resists fire for 60 minutes
  • FD90: Resists fire for 90 minutes
  • FD120: Resists fire for 120 minutes
  • These ratings are tested to international standards (BS EN 1634-1 and equivalent) and are a mandatory requirement under UAE building codes for specific occupancies.

    UAE Civil Defence Requirements

The UAE Civil Defence Authority requires fire rated doors in the following locations:

  • Escape routes and stairwells: Minimum FD60 in most residential buildings
  • Plant rooms, electrical rooms, generator rooms: FD60 or higher depending on risk
  • Hotel corridors and guest room doors: FD60 minimum (Civil Defence Approval required)
  • Hospitals and healthcare facilities: FD90 often specified for critical areas
  • High-rise residential towers: FD60 to FD90 depending on floor level and occupancy
  • Commercial offices and retail: FD60 typically specified for core and corridor doors
  • For Sharjah and Dubai specifically, the fire door supplier must hold Civil Defence approval — a certificate issued directly by the authority confirming the product has been tested and approved for use in UAE projects.

    When Is FD120 Required?

FD120 doors are specified in high-risk environments where fire could spread rapidly or where evacuation time is extended:

  • Industrial facilities and warehouses
  • Data centres and server rooms
  • Areas with significant fuel or chemical storage
  • Certain government and security facilities
  • What Makes a Fire Door Compliant in the UAE?

A compliant fire rated door in the UAE requires:

  • 1.Civil Defence Approval — from Sharjah CD, Dubai CD, or both depending on the emirate
  • 2.Certificate of Compliance — issued by an accredited testing body confirming the product meets fire resistance standards
  • 3.Proper installation — fire doors must be installed with the correct frame, seals, hardware, and closers. The door leaf alone does not provide the rated protection without the full assembly
  • 4.Documentation — your main contractor and consultant will require copies of all certificates
