Why Timber Choice Matters in the UAE
The UAE climate — extreme heat, high humidity in coastal areas, and aggressive air conditioning indoors — puts significant stress on wooden doors. The wrong timber or finish will warp, crack, or delaminate within 12–24 months. Specifying correctly at the design stage avoids costly replacements.
Timber Species Used in UAE Joinery
Meranti (Red Meranti)
The most widely used hardwood in UAE joinery. Good density, stable in humid conditions, accepts paint and veneer well. Cost-effective for large-scale projects like residential towers and hotels. Recommended for FD60/FD90 fire door cores and standard interior doors.
Beech
Dense, fine-grained European hardwood. Excellent for painted doors and lacquer finishes. Consistent grain makes it ideal for high-end villa doors and wardrobes. Higher cost than Meranti but superior surface finish.
African Teak (Iroko)
Naturally oily hardwood with excellent weather resistance. Commonly used for external doors, entrance doors, and semi-exposed locations. Rich brown tone works well in natural wood finishes without staining.
Oak (European Oak)
Premium choice for luxury villas, palaces, and five-star hotels. Distinctive grain, takes stain beautifully, extremely durable. Specified when the natural wood aesthetic is a design requirement.
MDF Core with Veneer
Not a solid wood but the most common construction for interior doors in UAE apartment fit-outs. Moisture-resistant MDF core with real wood veneer face. Dimensionally stable, cost-effective, and available in any timber appearance.
Door Construction Types
Solid Core
Full solid timber or engineered timber core. Heavy, excellent sound insulation, required for fire rated applications. Standard for hotel room doors, villa entrance doors, and fire rated doors.
Hollow Core
Lightweight, lower cost. Suitable only for internal wardrobe doors and low-traffic cupboard doors. Not appropriate for entrance doors or fire rated applications.
Fire Rated Core
Specialist core combining timber with fire-retardant materials to achieve FD60, FD90, or FD120 ratings. Must be tested and certified — the core alone does not determine the rating, the full assembly (frame, seals, hardware) must be tested together.
Finish Options
Painted (Lacquer)
Most popular in UAE villa and hotel projects. Smooth, cleanable, available in any RAL or NCS colour. Requires a stable MDF or Beech substrate for best results.
Natural Veneer
Real wood surface applied over an engineered core. Gives the appearance and warmth of solid wood at lower cost and better stability. Walnut, Oak, Wenge, and Teak veneers are popular in UAE hospitality projects.
Laminate
Durable, moisture-resistant, easy-clean surface. Preferred in high-traffic areas, service corridors, and budget residential fit-outs. Wide colour range, consistent finish.
High Gloss
Acrylic or lacquer high-gloss finish. Popular in modern villa kitchens and bedroom furniture. Requires careful installation to avoid visible scratch marks.
